Guarani Indians were among the first indigenous people to come into contact with European settlers in South America about 500 years ago, says Survival, which campaigns for the rights of tribal people.

An estimated 51,000 Guarani live in seven states in Brazil, making them the nation’s biggest tribe, according to the charity. More than 700 members of the tribe live in three villages in the Jaragua district just outside the city of Sao Paulo.

Historically, the Guarani practised slash-and-burn agriculture, prompting them to move every five years or so. Today, about two-thirds of the Guarani population live in rural locations in Brazil, the National Indian Foundation says.

There are currently about 900,000 indigenous people in Brazil, the Federation says. Guarani also live in Paraguay, Argentina and Bolivia.
