The glittering city of Hong Kong is home to over seven million people and like other metropols with high rents and soaring property prices it has long had a problem with homelessness.

While many resort to sleeping on the streets, others find refuge in the city’s numerous 24-hour McDonald's restaurants. Known locally as McRefugees or McSleepers, those who stay in the fast food restaurants find a safer and more comfortable place to spend the night. Some even bed down with their duvet, pillow and alarm clock set for the morning.

McDonald’s is aware of the phenomenon and said in a statement that they accommodate those who stay in their restaurants for longer than the usual visit, whilst striking a balance to ensure that customers enjoy their dining experience.
