Plans to build a new road between Hastings and Bexhill in the south of England have infuriated a group of activists who are trying everything to stop the project, which they criticise as costly and environmentally damaging. Some 50 dedicated opponents of the road started a tree-dwelling demonstration, camping out both underneath trees and up in their branches in an attempt to stop land being cleared for construction. Protestors had to be forcibly removed and police made 28 arrests.

Three campaigners take to the water in a flooded field, which lies on the proposed route of the new road. They are among around 200 people and half a dozen protest groups who have been involved in campaigning against the Hastings Bexhill link road.

The local council said that the bypass, which will cover 3.5 miles (5.6 km) and is projected to cost £90-100million, is necessary to the development of Hastings.

“This road is absolutely vital in terms of regenerating one of the most deprived parts of the south east, and it’s essential for that community, and the rest of East Sussex, that it’s delivered as soon as possible,” the East Sussex County Council said in a statement.

Activist Natalie Hynde, daughter of singer Chrissie Hynde of "The Pretenders" and Ray Davies of "The Kinks", was among protestors who camped out in trees on the planned construction site.

Like many others, she was removed and arrested. Although it was the first time she had ever been taken into custody, she said: “Arrest is not something I fear at all... and I’m sure will be the first of many. Acts of ecocide will not be tolerated.”

Despite enduring freezing weather and spending a night in a jail cell, she described her experience with the protest as: “more fun than you could possibly imagine.”

She explained her opposition to the road link project: “In this decade of austerity, 100 million is an obscene amount to be spending on such a deliberately aimless scheme. We should be looking towards more sustainable forms of transport."
