There was something old, something new, something borrowed and something double-ply for designers who battled it out in the 10th annual toilet paper wedding dress contest, held in New York City.

The elaborate gowns and lacy veils showed off at the contest were made out of rolls of toilet paper, and materials like glue, tape and thread.

The event organised by Cheap-Chic-Weddings.com was sponsored by Charmin toilet paper, and offered a prize of $10,000 to the top winner.

This year, the crown went to 28-year-old Susan Brennan, pictured modelling her creation “Romance on a Roll” above.

The ornate, full-length gown, crafted using some 20 rolls of toilet paper, could be detached at the waist to reveal a 1920's flapper-inspired dance dress underneath.

It took a month of work, said Brennan, who co-owns the online boutique Fare Oak and is a professional cheerleader for the Detroit Pistons.

"There was toilet paper everywhere," she said.
