Myanmar pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was born in Rangoon (now Yangon) in June 1945, she is the daughter of General Aung San, Myanmar's independence hero, who was assassinated in 1947.

She studied politics in New Delhi and philosophy, politics and economics at Britain's Oxford University. In 1972, she married British academic Michael Aris.

She returned to Yangon in April 1988 to take care of her dying mother at a time of pro-democracy demonstrations against the army regime. Persuaded to lead the movement and continue her father's legacy, she set up the National League for Democracy (NLD) party, becoming its secretary-general and calling for an end to military rule.

The junta placed Suu Kyi under house arrest in July 1989 for "endangering the state". She remained a prisoner in her home until November 13, 2010 when she was finally freed and allowed to resume her role as NLD leader.

Suu Kyi finally accepted her 1991 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo more than two decades after it was awarded to her.
Able to travel freely after 21 years, she stood in front of a packed hall to deliver her long-delayed acceptance speech.
