With his arms spread wide and his eyes fixed on the prize, a man runs up the "gostra", a pole covered in grease, during celebrations for the religious feast of St Julian outside the Maltese capital, Valletta.
The "gostra" is the focus of a game dating back to the Middle Ages, which sees participants making their way up the slick surface as they try to uproot one of the flags stuck at the top.
