Blood trickles down a man’s tattooed torso during Phuket's annual vegetarian festival, a celebration involving strict vegetarianism, spirit mediums and objects being pushed through devotees' pierced flesh.

The picture is one of many striking shots captured by Reuters photographers in October 2013 as they covered a wide array of stories, from life in Somalia’s battle-scarred capital to the troubled career of Toronto mayor Rob Ford.

Children play at a hotel in Mogadishu, a city slowly recovering after more than 20 years of anarchy and civil war in Somalia. The radical Islamist group al Shabaab used to control the city but was driven from Mogadishu two years ago by African troops. They still control swathes of countryside and have launched several attacks on the capital since 2011.

Feisal Omar: “I went into the Mogadishu guest house, bought a soda and sat in the hall where children were playing, swimming and cycling.

I sat near them but started sipping my soda so as not to distract them from their games. They kept on playing as I glanced in all directions. I spotted children peddling in front of a beautiful background. I reached for my camera and took the image.

This was the first time I had seen Somali children playing and enjoying themselves like this in more than two decades.”
