Fields of flowers lie stretched out near Keukenhof park in the Netherlands, adding splashes of vibrant red, bright yellow and dusky blue to the orderly landscape.

Keukenhof - which is both a tourist attraction and a showcase for the Dutch flower-growing industry - displays millions of blooms every year.

Reuters photographer Yves Herman photographed the fields from above in a vintage DC-3 Dakota aircraft, cruising around 1,400 feet over the sea of flowers.

The 30-minute flights are organised by a historic aircraft association together with Keukenhof park, and are also open to members of the public.

Brightly coloured fields of flowers are cultivated around the main tourist park at Keukenhof, creating a landscape that looks like a patchwork quilt.

Keukenhof has a particular focus on growing flowering bulbs, including tulips - the flower for which the Netherlands is most famous.

According to the park, the Netherlands is the globe’s biggest producer of tulip bulbs, generating some 4.2 billion every year.

Photographer Yves Herman said that shooting the pictures from the vintage aircraft was an impressive experience.

"My report will definitely not change anything in the world but it can certainly bring some positive feelings. We all need colours and fresh air,” he said.
