Security forces have come to help install a Police Peacekeeping Unit in the area. The initiative is part of a programme to improve security in Rio, which is gearing up to host the 2014 soccer World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games.

Heavily armed police take up position in Parque Alegria to secure the slum and make way for a Police Peacekeeping Unit (UPP) to be established.

The first of these community policing units was set up in 2008 as part of a programme to help restore the rule of law to areas of Rio de Janeiro controlled by gangs or militia groups.
