A group of Syrian rebel fighters stand holding their weapons as they receive military training.
The scene might seem typical of the bloody conflict that has raged in Syria for almost two years, but these are no ordinary fighters. They are female combatants being trained as members of the rebel Sawt al-Haq battalion to fight on the front line.

One of the female fighters, Um Jaafar, hugs her daughter while dressed in full combat gear.
Before the revolution Jaafar was a women’s hairdresser, but now her husband Abu (left), who is a commander of the rebel Sawt al-Haq battalion, has been training her to fight.

Other women are fighting in front-line roles for the rebels too, like this sniper who goes by the name "Guevara".
Guevara is a Syrian-Palestinian woman who was the director of a secondary school before the revolution. Now she fights in Aleppo as one of the main snipers for the Al Wa'ad battalion, where her husband serves as a commander.
