Wang Baiqiang is one of China’s roughly 200 million migrant workers, who travel from the countryside to work in big cities.

Life for rural migrants like Wang is tough. They often have to travel huge distances, and they are currently not entitled to the same urban welfare and services as permanent city residents - although the government is said to be planning to change this.

Wang packs up his belongings in his hometown of Dong’an. He is preparing to make the journey of well over 1,000 km (620 miles) to Yangzhou, part of a huge industrial area on the coast where he will begin a job in a shoe factory.
