Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina hailed crowds of tens of thousands packed into St Peter’s Square after being elected as the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church.
Taking the name Francis I, the 76 year old became the first non-European pope in nearly 1,300 years.
In many ways, Bergoglio was a novel choice: he is the first Jesuit pope, the first from Latin America, and the first to take the name Francis.
His choice of name evoked St Francis of Assisi, who led a life of poverty and simplicity, and some saw it as an indication that his reign could bring a radical change of style to the Church leadership.
Just over an hour before Pope Francis appeared on the central balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, white smoke poured from a chimney on the roof of the Sistine Chapel to signal 115 cardinal electors had selected a man to lead the world's 1.2 billion Roman Catholics.
Thousands of people sheltering from heavy rain under a sea of umbrellas had occupied the square all day to await the decision and the crowd swelled as soon as the white smoke emerged.
They cheered wildly and raced towards the basilica as the smoke billowed from a narrow makeshift chimney and St Peter's bells rang to indicate that a new pope had been chosen.
