On December 13 2012, China marked 75 years since the beginning of the Nanjing massacre, in which China says Japanese troops killed 300,000 people in what was then the national capital.

The event, also known as the "Rape of Nanking", is a sensitive political issue that has been a point of tension with Japan.

The figure of 300,000 deaths recorded by the Chinese is visible above the heads of people attending the ceremony. A postwar Allied tribunal put the death toll at 142,000, but some conservative Japanese politicians and scholars put the number much lower, or deny a massacre took place.
