A child peers into a commercial van waiting at a military checkpoint in Niono. He is some 70 km (43 miles) from the central Malian town of Diabaly, recaptured by French and Malian troops from Islamist rebels on Jan 21.

France hailed the advance as a significant step in its campaign against Islamists who seized control of Mali's north last year, but the fight goes on with the stakes raised by the recent hostage crisis in nearby Algeria.

A villager looks on as a French soldier stands guard in front of a charred pick-up truck used by Islamist rebels in Diabaly – one of eight rebel vehicles that were left wrecked in the town’s dusty streets after the French and Malian armies moved in.

The al Qaeda-linked rebels who were in control of the town melted away into surrounding scrubland to avoid air strikes. But residents in Diably said that some of the fleeing rebels had swapped their long robes for other clothes to blend in with the population, raising fears of ambushes or booby traps left behind in captured towns.

A Malian soldier searches a cyclist in Diabaly, where residents said that 200 Islamist fighters had held them captive for three days, using them as human shields against French air attacks.

With Diabaly recaptured, the fight goes on in other parts of the country with added international support after the seizure of hostages at an Algerian gas plant by Islamist guerrillas heightened fears that the whole region could become a stronghold for al Qaeda to launch international attacks.
