A densely packed crowd gathers to watch a trial run for an event that has captivated visitors to Siena for centuries: the famous Palio bareback horse race.

Every year on July 2 and August 16, almost without fail since the mid-1600s, riders compete around Siena's shell-shaped central square in a bid to win the Palio, a silk banner depicting the Madonna and child.

The race is contested by ten riders, each representing a different parish of Siena, who wear medieval costumes as they hurtle around the treacherous corners of the track in hopes of claiming victory.

Here, the jockey for the Valmontone parish, Jonathan Bartoletti, rides Lo Specialista during the fourth of six trial races in Del Campo square for the big event.
