In Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Ponijeri to the north, residents have had more than the usual winter cold and darkness to cope with lately.

Fog, a regular feature of the capital’s winter months, turned to a smog that has blanketed the city for weeks, disrupted school lessons and cancelled or diverted flights.

Motorists driving a car more than about 15 years old in the capital now face a penalty by police amid pollution concerns.

Local authorities have warned residents of the city, which lies in a narrow valley with Mount Trebevic towering over its buildings, to stay inside as much as possible.

Many in the capital have still ventured out, especially the young. Volunteers in Sarajevo’s main squares have been handing out masks to ward against the smog.

People are keeping their spirits up and taking on the smog with jokey antics. Some armed with vacuum cleaners have gone out to hoover up the smog, posting their exploits online.
