Luis Carlos Ledezma, who lives in a poor neighbourhood of Panama City, may only be 12 years old, but he is a member of a band that has performed at the Panama Jazz Festival and opened for internationally famous musicians like Ruben Blades and Herbie Hancock.

Ledezma belongs to the Junior Jazz band of the Danilo Perez Foundation, which teaches music to children and adolescents living in impoverished and dangerous areas.

Fourteen-year-old Pablo Mures also plays with the Junior Jazz band, which was formed over three years ago and has six members, all aged between 12 and 14.

The band is an initiative of the Danilo Perez Foundation, which aims to provide opportunities to young people who have been abandoned by their families, or who are affected or at risk from drugs, gangs and violence.
