Like many others, he is making use of a rough-and-ready outdoor facility in the capital Kiev, where fitness fans work out on makeshift machines, mostly made from scrap metal.

The Kachalka gym, set up on the banks of the river Dniper, dates back to the Soviet era and has been popular among Kiev residents for over 40 years. It now contains around 200 training machines, from metal weights secured on heavy link chains to punch bags made from stacks of tires.
