The holy month begins
Muslims the world over have been observing the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, a time of prayer, charity and self-restraint, during which believers fast through the daylight hours.
The month marks the revelation of Islam's holy book, the Koran, to the Prophet Mohammed, and Muslims observe the period by giving up bad habits, while many also take part in special nightlong worship.
The moon rises over the Jama Masjid (Grand Mosque) in the old quarters of Delhi at the beginning of the holy month in India. The start of Ramadan is dependent on the sighting of the new moon, so its dates can vary slightly, with Muslims in different countries beginning their fast on July 9, 10 or 11.
